Creating Certainty Anchors in Times of Uncertainty

As we all work through these most unprecedented of times, we are committed to showing up strong for you. Our hope is that you and yours are staying safe and healthy right now. Our whole team has exclusively worked remote for over a week now. We know that there are many battles right now, for many of you including: how to manage a remote workforce, financial stresses, health concerns, ensuring you have enough food and supplies on hand for your families. 

We are in the same boat as you, and want to let you know we are here to serve you still through these times. In business, we often talk about fighting to win. Right now, for many…it is about fighting to just stay in the fight.  That may involve pausing while shifts and changes are taking place to make it to the other side of this. We understand that deeply as we are doing the same as we operate in this new known and unknown reality of shelter in place.  

Certainty Anchors

Through these times of massive uncertainty, it is important to find what Good Life Podcast Host and Author Jonathon Fields calls: Certainty Anchors in his book Uncertainty: Turning Fear and Doubt into Fuel for Brilliance.  

“A certainty anchor is a practice or process that adds something known and reliable to your life when you may otherwise feel you’re spinning off in a million different directions. Rituals and routines can function as certainty anchors; their power comes from the simple fact that they are always there. They are grounding experiences to which you can always return, no matter what’s going on. Their consistency makes them effective tools to counter the anxiety that comes not only from living in uncertain times, but from embracing endeavors that ramp uncertainty even higher.”

This practice can be as simple as looking out your window at the sunrise and remembering that it is certain.  It could be reading for 5 minutes in the morning. It could be keeping that daily zoom huddle with your team. Perhaps it could be asking every team member about how they are doing right now.  It could be those people in your life that you have a quick chat with or text with each day…or perhaps share a funny meme with daily to create laughter (which boosts the immune system) and keeps us connected.

Jonathon reminds us that, for some, times of high-level sustained uncertainty can lead to debilitating anxiety. For others it becomes something completely different…that fuel for brilliance. Perhaps with the help of certainty anchors, we can all be moving toward the fuel for brilliance… even though our stomachs may be turning a bit.

Back to The Basics: A Tool For Setting Clear Expectations In Times of Certainty and Uncertainty

Many have reached out asking about how to manage and develop managers to keep teams engaged during the new reality of what our workforce looks like.  There are no simple answers to this question in these times. What we do know from our years of work in delivering our Best Manager Academy programs is: being able to set clear expectations is critical for the success of any team in times of certainty or uncertainty Each team member learns differently, likes recognition differently, and has different needs.  Managers that recognize this and work to understand these differences for each team member are the ones who rise to the top, time and time again….no matter what the environment.

They help to also strengthen some bonds as to what lies on the other side of this uncertainty season we are amidst.
